Movies in Villagio

Posted on 4:13 AM, under

If you've been to the movies at Villagio mall you probably have noticed the crappy sound distribution in the theater. Most of the sound effects / music coming from the front with the volume tuned up to the max.. just a prescription for headache.

What can be more annoying are those lights at the bottom corners of the screen. sometimes blue and sometimes red, depending on the LED rope lights they use in the theater. i don't know what's the point of using these lights. You still can't see the row letter to find your seat and they have to hire people with annoying flashlights to point people to their seats.

the black is never black anymore. Red is the new black at Villagio.

The exit signs used to be a problem when they first opened. This was my main problem with City Center's theater when they first opened too. They managed to solve this problem.

I'm waiting for them to replace those lights and let us have a nice movie experience. It's enough that we have to deal with those retards talking at the movies.

Ahmed, venting does not have to be conveyed by using highly insensitive and discriminatory language against a certain group of people. Whether intentionally or not, every time you use the 'R' word as an insult you help perpetuate the discrimination and oppression people with intellectual disabilities experience in their lives. Not only that, demoralizing and insulting any group of people is counterproductive to the issues you are trying to highlight. I just wished you refrained from using that word, as it would have made your blog post a whole lot more objective and less cringe worthy. Please have a look at the following, and wonderful I might add, blog post to further understand this issue http://davehingsburger.blogspot.com/2010/08/people-who-are.html

Nasser, I appreciate your input. I understand some people see the R word, like you referred to it, as politically incorrect. I just don't agree that we shouldn't use it. Why don't we stop calling this group of people retards instead of stop the use of the word. It just doesn't make sense.

according to my dictionary, to retard means to delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment.

when you describe someone (who is not mentally challenged) with the word retard, then you mean this definition and not mentally challenged.

same thing is arabic متخلف تعني متأخر
    ولا تعني صاحب اعاقة عقليه
even though they're often used interchangeably.

I know this took side tracked, but I appreciate you mentioning this.

There's a difference between using the word to describe an 'object', or in the context of the example above, and using it describe a 'person'. The analogy can be made when one would use the 'N' word to describe a person of African descent/background. To do so in our present day would be generally regarded as racially insensitive and discriminatory. They are different examples, but they have the same effect- To ostracize and alienate a group of people based on certain attributes that are different to ours. One mustn't underestimate the powerful effect a word can have on an individual and the subsequent long term ramifications. The reason I brought this up in the first place is because I have had the privilege to volunteer for a cause that has to do with people with intellectual disabilities, and I have seen first hand how hurtful the word is for them and their families when it is paraded about carelessly. Once enlightened, its difficult to be a quiet bystander when you hear people saying it.
I also apologize for steering away from your original post, as that wasn't my intention. On that note, I seldom watch movies at cinemas here anymore, as I am more than likely to have a bad experience. If not the disruptive crowd, then its due to the censoring. I would much rather stay at home and watch the latest releases from my laptop at my own convenience. Plus, I can think of a handful of more significant reasons to not go to villagio cinema in particular, such as the awful and tacky carpeting (as a design student, I can't help but gawk at it with disgust!), the bordering-on-arctic-cold temperature of the cinemas and not to mention the random layout of the entire place. Blegh
